In this session we were quizzed on Google Search. I learnt how to use Google effectively to nail down the exact results I am looking for. These are the shortcuts we explored:
And- The use of and between words instructs the algorithm to search for those two words specifically.
Minus- On the other hand, the use of a minus sign before a word instructs the algorithm to remove that particular word from the search.
Or- Or helps look for one of either of the words mentioned in the search bar or even both. For example, if you type in noodles or burgers, Google looks for either burgers or for noodles or both.
*- The astrix plays the role of a wildcard. This means that it takes place of a phrase that is assumed by the algorithm; a technique used to save time. For example: * cars are bought every year? Here the astrix replaces the phrase- How many.
" "- The quotation marks help direct the search to the specific word/ phrase that contain them. For example: "Steal spoons." This search will specifically look for steal spoons.
Site and filetype- These are advanced techniques that can be used to nail down the exact site and filetype respectively. For example, you can use site to look for an edu domain and use filetype to look for a particular filetype like ppt, pdf and so on.
Intitle and intext- these tags can be used to find particular words or phrases in the title/ text respectively.
